That's what I thought at first. I bought a bald cypress seedling and it looks way different from this tree. A different cultivar maybe?Bald cypress,
I have a Dawn Redwood and it looks a little different. I think rockm is right - it is a pond cypressPlanted along a street like that, it is a Dawn Redwood. I live in Arlington Heights and they are planting them all around town to replace all the ash trees that were lost. There are some 30 to 40 year old examples along Northwest Highway (Route 14) on the Arlington Heights Mount Prospect border. These are along th UP Northwest RR tracks.
I googled pond cypress images and so far it looks like the best matchCasAH is probably right.

Pond cypress is hardy to zone 5B, which makes you at the northern extreme. I've had pond cypress as bonsai here in Va--Zone 7. They didn't like the winter here much. Might be a pondy, but as a street tree in its Northern extreme, probably going to be a hard road for it.I have a Dawn Redwood and it looks a little different. BTW, this could also be a Bald Cypress. There are some varieties that produce different looking foliage than the flat feather shaped leaves that are the most common. There are also hybrids that cross between main BC and pond cypress. Pond cypress was considered a subspecies of BC for a while, I think.I googled pond cypress images and so far it looks like the best match
