I'd chop those 3 subtrunks to an inch and if it doesn't sprout back, just consider it the "wrong" maple.

Welcome to Crazy!

Nice.

I have a few acer ginnala and their leaves don’t appear to be quite as narrow relative to the length

Sounds like something Peter Chan would do lol, but to get the big trunk effect I guess your right mate, maybe if I was to go that route tho do it next spring now?

Mid summer. You tend to get the best backbud response when it's in active growth.

If it already told itself what buds it will grow in spring, you'll stall it if you chop em off.
Before that is almost sure to stall it because there is no root to top communication in winter.

Right at the Summer Solstice'll give you the best response.

Sounds like a plan mate, I bought it pretty much as a lost cause but everything deserves a 2nd chance right….. shall I lob all 3 off then and just go for it or do 1/2 and see how it gets on? Thanks in advance

That's a Tegmentosum (some have less "sharp" foliage like this)

Or standard Tatarican with weird features..

I like it!

Think about what you want the future of this tree to be before you do any heavy chops. Not every maple needs to be a tater. I think it looks pretty good.

image.jpgHere is a leaf off of one of my Amur Maple (ginnala). It appears to be more deeply lobed than what you have
