thought I would start a thread unique trees or trees that baffle mankind could be unlikely age . Location or just great. I will start the pic us of a protected tree near the capital of Ottawa Canada. It is 2 trees the inside smaller tree is betula alleghaniensis or yellow birch the larger tree is prunus serotina or black cherry When the Europeans came here the native tribes pointed out the unique relationship of these 2 species . They will grow in forests near each other in same soil . Both well but when the combine in forests in same area where there is a mix of both . They both thrive better . Unfortunately the cherries in this situation were exploited . Few such forests exists . This is in the sight of one such place . These 2 trees get bizarre from there the birch is growing inside the cherry . Sounds simple the birch propagated in a crack or hollow in the cherry . Or the cherry grew around the Birch . But he cherry is far older and was known to man for a long time the birch seems to have sprouted not in a crack or hollow . But in a solid wood cherry . As they grow the birch is not filling a existing space nor is it growing and forcing the cherry to spread apart . They have been studied fairly heavily by science . The cherry seems to be expanding to make room for the birch to grow . As crazy as that sounds. No one has any idea what or why this is happening and why exactly these 2 species seem to have a special relationship Feel free ro add any special trees to this post my thinking is trees in nature not bonsai

I’m thinking I bout it birch don’t bonsai well but yellow seeds east for me to get having trouble sourcing black cherry been looking for a tree worth collecting for some time . They are apparently not good also there feeder roots are very small and easily break making repoting difficult but if I can get seeds or seedling if both going to put them in a pot and see what happens . 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️Also going to try track down the above tree get better pics it’s one of 150 remarkable trees as there called around the capital but it’s location is not listed but I think I can find it want better pics the above pic is from a government web sight

I posted before I have a uncle with black cherry grove in his forest was going to go there . Life cycle interesting nature tree makes heavy shade . In a grove there is prolific seedlings .on forest floor deer will eat them . They live aprox 5 to 7 years if they get sun they continue . Like if a big tree falls or is cut down . If no sun they die and are replaced . Once the plant gets good sun the leaves become poison and deer will not eat them my uncle had his hole grove of mature trees stollen so unless there is a crazy amount of seedlings when I go there I’m not taking any so they regrow

I gotta get some pics of the IMMENSE raft-style trees created by cedars and beeches falling into ravines as they erode!

There's other great ones I'd like to share..

Great thread idea!

Always thought cedar would. Be very cool raft bonsai . Wood so rot resistant . 1/3 hollow deadwood log with trees sprouting

They are SUPER interesting, in the main spot/ravine I'm thinking of... It's a washriver ravine with large V-shaped opening DIRECTLY onto da'lake.

They have to grow tall, quick (further back) to get back to the light. It's groovy, though, they have all the stored energy of... HALF a fallen tree! 😂

I got black cherry every where!!!!!
Lucky you the trees seed heavily . But I don’t have a location . My buckle had a grove of them stolen I was planning of getting some there .🤷‍♂️ Was surprised to find out it’s one of the few trees that seed sources in the USA can not ship to Canada 🤷‍♂️ Hopping to get a few this weekend from a local supplier . Very curious to try them . My understanding. Is there difficult as bonsai . Main reason is the feeder roots are very fine and break easily making reports difficult . Have you any experience with them

Only what I dug up last year. I like to think that fine rooted things are potted more frequently, with less root molestation. They are tough as nails and can handle frequent potting up. Like with many of cold loving deciduous, they can die back funky if you do major stuff in growing season. They can look decent when small. Been playing with this for two years now 20220516_171411.jpg

Nothing really special about this tree . But you don’t see them this size in North America . No planted date listed . Location is Canadian national arboretum . Ottawa Ontario Canada . Arboretum was started right after turn off the century 1900 and there are several trees from that date .

Interesting tree pic does not justify the size estimate between 5 and 6 feet across the trunk very large wound along face of trunk is visible I. First pic . If I was a betting man I would go with severe ice storm 1988 . Tree is only tree in Canadian National arboretum that there is no public access to no info on tree . Arboretum is dominated by unique cultivars . Tree is differently white oak of some kind . But the lobe tips of the leaves are slightly more pointed then normal

Interesting story here . Reference is the book the last stand . Referring to the last stand of old growth forest in Ontario Canada . Which is a cliff face along the Bruce peninsula . Part of the Niagara escarpment . The pic with the red line shows the escarpment . The mist famous example of the escarpment is the water flows over it at Niagara Falls , the Bruce peninsula is the thin along the thin piece of land sticking up towards the north . Into Lake Huron . The pic of the tree is according to the book ( trying to find a copy ) the oldest tree in eastern Canada .and north east USA. At 1335 years old . No idea how the age was determined at this point . There apparently is a USA along the escarpment over 1300 also
