Thanks Paul for sharing these with us.

You are most welcome Francis.

I'll be going to DC on business next week hope to drop by NA and see some of these. I know they have put most in storage but they did tell me some will still be on display in one of the areas.

This time of year there will not be much to see. You should be able to see the trees in the tropical conservatory and if my memory serves me right, they usually put the more cold tolerant trees under cover in the Chinese Pavilion. Have a great trip.

ON side note Hope to see you in Burnell on January 16th.

I am planning on attending and I look forward to seeing you also.

Regards,
Paul

Don't know which plants and pots you're talking about. This may well be true, but having seen the NA's collection of pots which aren't on display and in storage, I can say that that collection could be worth more than the trees. I'd be VERY surprised if someone walked off with a pot one of the donated Japanese or Chinese trees came in, since it would be considered more than simple petty theft, as those pots are worth considerably more than $300 ($3000 would be more in line).

I hope this allegation isn't true.

"To me, the Corkbark doesn't look very happy or too well cared for. Maybe that's just the way they are."

This tree is a donation from Yee-Sun Wu. It not a bonsai, per se. It is a penjing tree, in training since 1936, designed to look a bit lean. The pot the tree is in is very old. It is very well cared for.

See the third set of photos. Yee-Sun Wu donated dozens of old penjing to the Arb a while back. His donations formed the backbone of the Chinese collection. There are many "non bonsai" looking bonsai in it.:D

Bob,

Didn't mean to sound like a jerk. Sorry.

What I meant was the Penjing trees at the Arb look very different than the other bonsai there. That particular black pine, I think, is not the same cultivar used for Japanese bonsai and has a bit of a different look. All of Yee-Sun Wu's trees are subtropical in origin...

Paul, thanks for sharing. So far my favorite tree is the Pauper's Tea by Yee-Sun Wu.:)

Hank,

It has been my pleasure.

I like that particular tree myself. Wish I could capture that feel in a few of my own Sageretia's.

Regards,
Paul

Rock,

Thanks for your input.

As you pointed out, the US collection offers more than just the classical styled Japanese bonsai.

I enjoy looking at the penjing myself. Wish there was more information available or access to penjing masters here in this country.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Paul

With this installment, our trip through the US National Bonsai Collection will come to an end.

Unfortunately, I do not have any info on the trees shown in the next two photos. If anyone does, please feel free to join in.

The trees I have shown in this thread only represent a portion of this great collection. A collection we should all be proud of and if possible, help support.

Best wishes to all in 2010.

Regards,
Paul

Hi Mark. Never did I take your response to my question in a bad way. I honestly was glad for the info. I can see where the shortness of my response could have come across that way. I was pressed for time but I still wanted to say thanks for the site and also for all the other info you post here.

Bob.
