Worked this trident today as we have hard freezes coming, and buds are popping.
Planted on a tile for 2 years in the ground, this tree thickened from .5 inches to now 2.5 inches thick above the nebari.
The roots aren’t great - I see the drawback now of planting on a tile versus screwed into a board - the tree does lift up a bit. It created a massive base, but with large roots that aren’t terribly attractive.
I wounded the root base and applied a RadialDisc (tm) type device to encourage horizontal spread should I be lucky enough to get new roots. Sphagnum around the rooting hormone powder. Screwed into the bottom of the box. We shall see - if it doesn’t throw new roots, this may have to become a mother tree in the ground permanently for air layers. Worth a shot!
