Hi everyone, still new to the forum. I figured posting directly into the maples area seemed most appropriate.

This year when my maples leafed out I noticed the leaves on this tree never getting quite as lush as they should be. I've been caring for this tree for at least 4 years now so pretty used to how it should look in spring and after several weeks since leafing out beginning to suspect that the tree has some kind of disease. Has anyone seen this before? I'm located in zone 7 (middle TN).

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

I have one that's droopy like this because it got near freezing after leafing out, or at least that's what I assume. I was told they don't like to get very cold immediately after the first leaves appear. Good luck

9?
I may not be looking close enough but I can't see anything wrong with those leaves.
4 years is not very long in the life of a tree or in terms of bonsai.
It may be different from previous years. Have you made any changes?
Watering?
Fertilizer?
When was it repotted last?
So many variables that we don't know about let alone short term changes in weather, etc.

It might be because it's nervous about falling off the railing.

Looks fine to me but if you the leaves look like that before you water then I say it is a bit dehydrated. Give it some water then it will perk up. I noticed that on some of mine.

It may be do the freezing cold snap we experienced right around the same time it was beginning to leaf out, but my other maple trident did not experience this
(see here) - https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/trident-maple-conundrum.49345/

Interestingly enough I have a flaming maple tree also in my backyard which also struggled at about the same time as this tree so wondering if it really was just something related to the cold but this and the flaming maple were the only ones affected. The tridents are very forgiving, the other one I posted on has at least a foot of roots growing out of the bottom of the pot and this one does this not. I was thinking v. wilt but it almost seems like a 4 letter word around here so didn't want to offer that as a possibility.
