DSC00821.JPGDSC00822.JPGDSC00823.JPGDSC00826.JPGDSC00827.JPGI dug this trident today. It had a strange root system . I am going to see if the root part will grow? What do you all think?

I hope you have better luck than I. I have taken five of those massive bottoms off of those that I did by ground layer. None of the root bases sprouted but they sure looked like they should. Maybe at the college greenhouse it may fair better.

The one in the third picture should go. I see no reason why this should not sprout.

Is this just a question of timing with latent buds and/or cell differentiation? If it the stock was dormant then wouldn't those roots be storing energy to push buds, despite being wounded?

I'm trying something similar with a "Bloodgood" Japanese maple I've been working on. I had two straggly roots just above the nebari that I'm hoping will bud. We'll see how it goes. Good luck! :D
