Tried my hand at a root over rock today. I purchased two tridents last fall. When I got into the roots of the first they were poor so I trimmed to a radial pattern and planted to grow longer roots.

The second tree was a little more promising and I was able to get it on a rock.

Nice, try to look at how the roots are developing from time to time, they can cross each other pretty quickly, but if you spot it early, you can fix them before it becomes a problem.

9?
That should look good in a couple of years.
For the first year make sure that some water gets down the top between the foil and rock so the roots there grow well. You can probably peel a bit of foil back above ground level to allow more water in. Feed plenty (make sure some goes down the rock where the roots are growing) and let the top grow all summer to get good diameter increase in both roots and trunk.
As already advised, unwrap and check that the roots are still in good position next spring. The roots should still be flexible enough to make adjustments but after a couple of years you will be stuck with whatever has grown.

Great to see more people adopting the foil wrap for root over rock development.

Right now the opening at the top is small because there were some smaller roots I was try to keep moist. I also added some moist sand and spagnum to hold in the moisture. I will be pulling it next spring to check progress. This was inspired by your blog and posts here @Shibui
