Anyone have any experience with trident seed from Johnnymapleseed?

I just bought another 600 from there, located in Kansas. Seed should be here around Tuesday Nov. 3.

This year I plan to grow all 600 and grow them all under screen.

Why would you grow the seeds under screen?
Thanks

Smoke can correct me if I'm wrong, but I have heard that technique was used to provide movement to small seedlings so that they don't just grow straight up.

Wow.600 seed. How many you think will germinate? Are you planning on picking the best?Anything you look for in a first year seedling? Can you tell differences in leaf size and shape that soon?

Smoke when growing them under screens, what advantage do you gain over just bending a trunk that small with wire? I would assume that even the trunks on the ones from the thread you linked here that have been topped would still be easily bent as they are only "pencil sized".

My first thought is that you don't have to wire 600 seedlings...lol

I find it amusing that Al, the most experienced trident maple member of this forum, asks for advice on trident maple seed. I imagine 600 cuttings would be a stretch from 67 maples of squat proportions.

Truth is, you'd probably get bad seed and have better success with it then most here with superior seed.

A testament to your humility and continual quest for the "holy grail".

Kudos.

Sake.

Good night.

Well, I think one would have to study this close up and really look at how the trunks move. How subtle some of the bends are. How fluid and smooth they turn one way then the other. Also notice how the bark texture follows every curve as it traces its way to the top. You can't get that with wire.

Then think about wiring a small seedling like this and trying to capture this subtle movements and do it with out breaking trunks now capturing wire scars on seedlings that grow so fast.

Those look great do you plan to sell them? I'd be interested in buying a tray like the one pictured.

The seeds are here. Now all I have to do is build a 100 square foot growing box to grow them in.

I hope more germinate than last year. I had terrible rate with the seed. Someone posted to my blog that seed rack is terrible about not providing fresh seed. I hope this year is better.

They are too small yet to cull. Not sure I even want to do that. I use seedlings for all sorts of stuff so I just graft them on for roots and branches. Will wait this season on the last ones to see this years leaves. They looked promising though and were really small.

al or anyone else: im wanting to start some mountain maples possibly some momjis
im looking for a good source
anyone know of any?
i didnt have great results from seed rack but i also didnt cold stratify as long as recommended.
i thought i had good results.
i did amurs and buergerianum
both inspired by al

Best seed I ever got was the Fujiyama seed from Dallas Bonsai, zelkova and black pine had very high percent rate. After that would be Angelgrove tree seed company.I orders from seed rack once and only once.Angelgrove has great info on sewing the seeds and stratification.
