Picked up two new tridents last week they look like they need a good repotting but otherwise seem very healthy albeit extremely overgrown. I trimmed them back to two leaves per shoot. A week later and they're pushing new growth. The day after the trim we went into a week long heat wave and I kept them under a 30% shade cloth. The new growth is coming in way more wrinkled then usual new trident growth. iPhone pics below sorry I didn't get better ones. The last 2 days when the new leaves emerged its been pouring hard, I'm sure they were overwatered during this. They also had new fertilizer applied before the storm which is a mild balanced organic I use on everything 4/5/4. Anyone seen deformed leaves come in after a good trim? My other trident was partially defoliated when I trimmed these two back and its new growth is glossy and perfect. The pics below show the wrinkled leaves and the old growth on the same tree. Not really worried the trees sick but I'd like to know what's causing the ugly growth if anyone has a clue?

Maybe they're just going to push out much bigger leaves as I trimmed it back hard and it hadnt been pruned this year. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks once the growth hardens off and greens up.

I sure wish you would show more pic's of whole trees... ;) You seem to have some very nice ones.

i don't know i'm wary about posting pics of my trees online... Only cause I haven't met all of you in person. Guess that's silly on a bonsai forum, i'm sure eventually i'll go on a posting spree. I just want to do it right and take proper pictures and I don't have a setup for that right now. I do plan to do it eventually though.

Understood. I worry every once in a while too, but I think it's safer out here than many places. When (hopefully) I really have business going I'll be taking a lot more precautions than I am now.

If you get a set up and feel secure enough sometime, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to see your trees though. :)

What is the reason for caution. I'm not asking because I disagree. I'm asking because I feel like I'm missing something and am curiouse what I'm not considering.

By the way Bens trees are quite nice!!! We all are missing out a bit on him not posting even a few teasers here an there.

I am also having a bit of what you described above on the trident I just got. It seems to have been worse right after it arrived. And has gotten better since. But it still is happening here and there. Have you figured out what might be going on with yours?

They're no longer wrinkled they just became large leaves for the trident. I think it was a combination of the 3 days of rain before they emerged and very little sun. All is well now.

What I worry about living in a city like Brooklyn near a metropolis like NYC in close proximity to miklions of people that could hop my fence if they knew the value of what was there is theft. It happens out in the middle of nowhere and is much more likely here. I've found most people into bonsai to be quite honest and good hearted but I rather not take the chance. Call me paranoid, you may be right!!!

That was my assumption but I didn't want to call it out without asking. I have a back yard that is very visible and could be easily targeted if someone were so bold. I guess I share your concern. Although I'm not quite as deep into it as many here.

A lot of times when you have purple leaves like that, it is a phosphorous deficiency. Your storm may have pushed all the nutrients you just applied through your plant without time for it to absorb it. Also, not posting pictures on this website seems kinda sac-religious. ANYWAYS... good luck with your trees!

If you dont give out your exact location, and you have the iPhone GPS NOT linked to your photos, that takes away a lot of liklihood that people online would somehow track you down and snatch 'em. It's the casual passersby that mention what they saw to a friend of a friend...

Good advise about turning off GPS (esp on phone pics) but that is not all you have to be careful about. I've tracked a few of you down just out of curiosity. It is easy to get real names, work, address, work location, etc. after you got a small bit of personal info.

With some trading here, info like address is also easily taken/given away.

Taking some precaution is wise but for me, I only take it so much. If someone is crazy enough to risk getting caught with my "junk" trees...MOLON LAVE! Be careful though, these words come with some appropriate equipment. Trees, pots, soil, copper, and aluminum may not be the only things you will take home... ;)

Well said Dario! I have a friend who lives within the city limits (no use of firearms) and regularly uses a .22 nail gun in his back yard. All of his neighbors have been burgled, but surprisingly the guy that's always "shooting" has been left alone!

That's a good thing here in NC, we don't have bullsh@$ laws like they do in NY, We find you in our yard after dark and the police find you there in the morning. That is if they get past my bulldogs. LOL

about a month ago, I had about a dozen plants stolen from my nursery...drove right through my yard in the middle of the day...stopped and loaded up! Haven't been back since but the cameras are ready for them now!!! ...not that even a good photo will be a sure thing when it comes to finding them though I am afraid....the retired lady across the tree is in the loop as well now...what else can you do??

Anyhow...better safe than sorry...Its only been in the last year that I have let anyone on the property that I don't know well...guess that is all of that:(

I don't think the folks that hit me had any idea what they were looking at...and that is a good thing!!!

I have really enjoyed your videos, I like bald cypress a lot. I fish around these beautiful trees all the time.

Sorry to hear that John.

Getting the plate number is much better though. ;)

Not knowing what to take is good for you...bad for the stolen plants. It is likely they do not know how to care for them too.

Sorry to hear this, John. I'm wondering what sort of camera set up you have? A friend has one of those motion triggered game cameras hanging over the walkway to his backyard. I understand they're pretty cheap, but I'd probably need two or three.

Game cameras are what I am using now...but will probably upgrade to a better wireless system in the future.

Got that covered now! only one way on and off the property! anything less than a license plate is most likely useless unless you know the individual.
