I was itching for a late winter tree project....found this!

Smaller one this time, and my first Japanese cultivar ever.
Its called Emerald Spreader or Taxus cuspidata 'Monloo'.
Gonna minimize and style this one first and expose the nebari.
Very small foliage on this one.

Gonna hack away and wire out later today hopefully....I'm on-call this week.

I have opened it up, which I hope will induce lots of new interior growth, it already has lots of buds along the branches......Prolific Buds (name of my future reggae-dub single)....

Wired out the primary structure and a couple secondaries....

Obviously I changed the planting angle....

I need to grow some back branches!

I will have to baby this one and keep it out of frost.

Thoughts?...
Did I go too far?....
Will it die?....

Any esoteric thoughts on the new Taxus.....

I'm still licking my wounds from my 6 that died last year...
I have a good feeling about this one. Seems very healthy.....might get some more.....

Was this one fully bare rooted with reduced foliage again?

Did you do anything different this time? Since the last ones poofed out...

I only raked away the top of the soil to expose the nebari.
Didn't touch the vast majority of the rootball.

Plan to let it go in the nursery mix until 2021.
Just a top dressing of good soil.

The last ones had no trouble recovering from bare rooting....but I think it was poor winter protection, in a new place that is a bit colder, that killed them.

Any esoteric thoughts on the new Taxus.....

I jumped to the @ so I was a bit surprised to see it stripped all the way down upon scrolling up.

I have gotten very comfortable leaving much more foliage, and waiting to reveal what I know is coming. Because I found out the only way to sustainably enjoy what can be revealed, is to reveal it slow.

Via this method I talk about...
Pouring health from your sacrifice stuff to your keeper stuff, without spilling any energy. It is the fastest way to sustainable enjoyment of what can be.
The best things come to those who wait!
You know Joey from Friends was in one of those commercials? We have to wait longer!

After that surprise, and a little worry, I like the pot, dig what can be, but would like to see you ..... Showing us more growth. Tree specific Growth. Because the new indoor set-up is nice. The new display area is looking pimp. You're going to need .... I don't wanna say better material cuz fuck that cliche you need bullshit, but you're going to need better material!

Lick the wounds fast, or use the blood to drain the display area! It's going down!

Hey Mike! Nice find. I bare rooted one just like it July last year and potted into bonsai soil. Bought it in April.
Never took a set back, and am eager to see how it grows this year. I believe you're subbed to the thread.
I haven't put any wire to it, haven't opened it up much since I potted 1st this time. A little for air and light.
With junipers it varies for me. One I'll pot up tending to the roots 1st, others, I train 1st.

I think I tend to train more juniper 1st, as you've done with this yew. I want to get the bends
into younger material and while the roots are fixed helps, so I tend to train 1st more often.

Guess I don't recall the 6 you lost of another variety. Sorry about that, that's rough man.
...and yes, get a couple more and pot one up this Summer and let it run.
I like how much you were able to crank this one down. Best of luck with it.
So you're going for a formal cascade with this?
You're right this variety is prolific with buds along the branches :)
"reggae-dub single" ? huh?

For others...
This is just HVAC speak for, you created something you need to fill.

I'm not saying he needs better material.

He's made the space for it.

You can't use home Depot stock for that display like you can't use farts for makeup air!

That is a lot of chopping all at once. Wish you the best.
So far so good.
Honestly I think yews can take as much chopping up top as you want to give them.
Seems that they are less tolerant of root chopping and may like some winter protection....winter was my big downfall with previous yews, I think....unless it was a disease.

It at least a semi cascade!
Budding out now....
Awesome! Glad it's waking up ready to go get 'em :) This is going to be a nice one.
Mine's been out of the "cave" 2-3 weeks now, and maybe a tad less drab looking than it was.
Don't know if it's the lack of light through the Winter, or if it's been warmer there in MD
but mines definitely not there yet. Looking forward to opening it up some this year.

It has been warm....but I also kept it inside with my tropicals for a while after that work. I didn't want to see any freezing temps overnight after all that.

But it looks like the dangerous temps overnight are about done with now.
So I gave it a bit of a head start.
