I am having a hard time trying to find a pot for this tree. I know I cant repot until next year but I wanted to start looking and Ive spent a few hours but just cant seem to find the right one.

The training pot it is in (for reference) is @ 16 inches long x 11 inches wide

The tree is 16" tall so by the "rules" a 10 inch pot is called for, but to be honest, I think that might be too small for the root spread.

I like really this pot, but I think it might be too big

This one might be the right size ?

Anyone have any suggestions/sources might have missed?

Thanks

That first one is nice, though it may benefit from a few more years in a larger pot to get the primary branches going, then moving it to a smaller container. I find that anytime I repot a pine into a smaller pot, it slows them down.

A few places I like and trust are:
Yorozu-en: stores.ebay.com/yorozuen-annex?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
Ryan Bell: http://japanesebonsaipots.net
Matt Ouwinga: http://stores.ebay.com/kaedebonsai-en?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Both those pots are very masculine looking and since the tree is in it's early stages of design
I think putting it in a pot like these says this high school baseball star is being presented to the pros as a superstar. More sizzle then steak. My preference would be first for the health of the tree ( I agree a smaller pot slows things down) and then something it could grow on in and allow it to be shown at home in it's latest form. I see an unglazed drum pot (round) in it's future. That way as it progresses and changes, it could be simply turned to present it's current best side. Closer to completion it may call for such a pot as being sold on ebay. It may be masculine with a feminine flare in which case a square pot with rounded corners may be more
accomodating.
I like my trees in a nice pot as opposed to a nursery or training pot. But only time and the tree will tell you what works best for it now....:)

So you guys think I should leave it in its current pot for a few more years to develop branching then look to repot?

No question about it. While building the branch structure, the only reason I'd repot is if water is pooling and running over the sides after repeated passes...even then, aerating with a chopstick can get you another year.

Ok, I can still look for the right pot without the pressure of finding something in time for next year.
Trying to find people that sell pots >10 inches seems to be a bit of a problem. If anyone else has good places, Id be interested in checking them out.

I did scrape the top 1/4 inch of soil and added new soil. It drains very fast so it should be good for now.

Thanks

Check bonsai classifieds on Facebook for more pots than you can shake a stick at.

So how does that work exactly? Is it secure or do you just paypal them money and hope you dont get screwed?

It is the honor system but you have PayPal protection and most of the pots are either by proffesional potters or by bigger names in the bonsai market.

Do you have a link to the page that you can post?

Thanks

Ive seen Ron Lang's site. I cant make it to his workshop but when we get some more branch development on the tree, Ill contact him and see what he suggests if I dont figure it out beforehand.

Regardless of the pots. I have purchased multiple items from bonsaivision and the customer service is great. I have had the owner follow up with me and ask if everything went well. The new line of stainless tools are very well made and cheap. Super quality I can't say enough good things about this guy and his tools and pots. If I said much more you would think I was a paid spokesman.
