I’ve been interested in shohin twisted exposed root pyracanthas for a while but couldn’t find any resources on how they’re created. I spring I planted a few pyracantha berries and had 5 seedlings pop up. I potted 1 of them in a tall tube filled with coarse aggregate. It’s grown well and I wired the trunk a little while ago. Today I unwired the trunk and checked on the roots. They seem to naturally being doing as I’d hoped! I’m sure they’re twisting and turning down the rest of the tube as well. The roots have hit the bottom of the pot and are starting to poke out the drainage holes. I’ll probably repot the seedling in spring and wire and twist the roots and slowly start exposing them in the future. I’ll try to update this thread when I have some more progress to report

Ask and ye shall receive!

Both of these are from the same batch of seeds, this is only their second season of life!

Here are a few more of my neagari projects. Crabapple, JM, trident. The crab and JM are also only 1 and a bit seasons old (seeds sown last spring, August 2021), the trident is in its 3rd season. The trident has been grafted to eventually become the attached vert.

The roots of the crab double right back under themselves below the soil line

Good job man! I think the way they create the exposed roots is growing them in long cylinder tubes and fill them with peanut foams.
