These things are very difficult to grow in AZ they need constant filtered sun. They always suck me in at the nursery and I end up killing them! "Not gonna happen" this time! I nursed them through the summer and just repotted them in coarse DE, 8822, and pumice. Left a bit of soil on them and cleaned them up a bit.

Why

And not just a lot of water?

Sorce
They just burn to a crisp at 110. I kept these two behind my bench under a shade screen.

I did not bare foot either one so it does have some soil in the mix. Pond baskets dont retain as much heat as a pot is my thinking. I could cover the pot and retain more moisture.

Just hard to grow at times.

Evaporation is a function of surface and humidity level. You have more open surface available with a pond basket than with a pot. If it's in the shade, a pot would have less open surface and both would be the ambient air temp.

You know a lot more than I do but I have used about 1/4 sifted bark chips from mulch in some of my mix. Just little pieces to help in water retention.
Just a thought.
