Two (2) weeks ago, I came about this (ball and burlap) 12 feet TX Persimmon (Diospyros Texana). Chopped it and brought it home. Replaced the silty fine sand it is in and prayed it survive. Today I noticed a bud w/ 4 leaves. :) I hope it grow some more before fall arrives. I may have to provide winter protection for this tree this year.

I really like this one. :)

This trunk has a lot of character. Almost like ancient trees that are so huge you can stand in the open crevaces. It is a good thing you live in the climate you do. :D Up here in the Northeast, we have pines, junipers, arborvitae, yew and spruce. You could not do a fraction of the work you are doing on the species up here. Also, our growing season is only about 4 months or so.

Thanks.

When I initially saw it, the nebari is about 3 " below the soil. Visible trunk is the white-ish bark...the darker portion was buried.

BTW, trunk is about 4" and from soil is about 15" tall right now.

I asked the vendor if he found me weird, digging below the soil then chopping it on site. He shrugged his shoulders and said, kinda (being polite). :p He did admit that I am the only one who does these things. LOL

If you don't mind me asking...How do you handle the leftover brush after chopping these down....? Do you ask or just put the brush in the dumpster outback....? Same question if you are digging these from someone's yard....?

I guess if I had a truck this question wouldn't even come up...However if I was on a collecting trip it would either be my HHR (small suv) or large conversion van....20 MPG difference between the two and mega difference in size.

I only drive a sedan and came home with 6 large bushes on couple of trips. :o

I always ask if I can leave the trimmings behind. I usually bag them up and the owners or vendor usually is fine with it. If that is not acceptable, I bring it home.

Hadn't really thought about bagging the left over brush up....Thank you for the idea.

I think this one made it. It has more than a dozen buds/sprouts now...a few are about 4" long already. Happy dance!!! :D

I plan on bringing it in when we have freezing temps this year. :)

Any update on this?

Thanks for the interest. It is still alive but slowed down tremendously after fall. I decided to leave it outside even during our (seldom) deep freeze and some leaves died and turned black. I will know if the damage is more come spring (a month from now here in TX).

Pic taken 2 months ago...

I (removed some growth and) pruned most of the remaining back to 2 nodes and all re-sprouted. This year's growth are about 4" all throughout already and most are branching too.

I am excited with this one. :)

Last month, I guy wired this baby and pruned again. Budding now and should look a lot bushier by months end.

What is interesting is that it sprouted from within one uro (the small one above right the big deadwood). Of course there is a live portion inside for it to happen but I found it neat...and not sure yet if I will keep the branches (yes there are 2) or remove them.

I'll try to snap a pic this weekend and post.

As of today (05/03/2014)...lots of bud that are not too visible yet. As I said, it should be bushy by months end. :)

Some will call me crazy (nothing new :D) but I am considering removing the back trunk. Any thoughts on this?

A virt w/o the back trunk. I can leave a snag there and do some carving later also.

What do you think?

Honest I like it w/o the back trunk;) The virt helped me envision it from your perspective and I think it is a winner:cool:

I agree with getting rid of the back truck. It helps reduce the visual bulk in that area. It also improves the movement.

Thanks guys.

I just noticed...the proposed tree looks like a hand...flipping the finger! :o LOL
