Hey all. Just wanted to share an elm I'm currently developing. It's still in early structural stages, these could be further along but I impatiently pruned branches back rather than allowing them to thicken to a greater degree first
Lessons learned.
I collected this tree in a mesic woodland in southern Illinois. It was submerged in about a foot of water, in an area that floods annually. It was about 25 feet tall at collection time.
It grew well year one with no issues.
Year two I learned the very harsh lesson of not overhead watering deciduous - in particular elms, and the lovely black spot fungal condition it had pretty much eliminated the second season. Again lessons learned.
Year three (current) it was repotted into a new wood box. It's roots were healthy. Black spot was denied all opportunities and the tree grew as you would expect an elm to do. Producing several feet of growth.
I just finished fall work on it with some branch removal and slightly refined the dead areas. It needs many years still and both the "apex's" I want to thicken more.
Just wanted to share and hopefully get some feedback on proper cultivation of this species, as I have mostly relied on standard deciduous techniques. Thank you.
These first pics are year two.
