I have a dwarf hawaiian umbrella bonsai directly from Maui rooted inside lava rock. The lava rock sits on top of a humidity tray layered with pebbles.

Since rooted from inside the lava rock and has roots shooting out bottom, side and aerial. How should it be repot? Does it need soil bury under bonsai soil? Or I can just root prunning and continue to sit the lava rock on top layer of gravel tray?

I had Umbrella for over 15 years from Maui but never took any steps to properly prune it or learn bonsai until now. Three stem grew up to 12 inch high straight as a stick and I had to hard-wood root cut it to start over. So I am planning to repot it.
