Why are you growing an Ume in a pond basket?

Like Adair, I think it's a mistake.

Prunus in general like to have "wet feet". If the roots grow too long, they can be trimmed, or cut before repotting, in Feb-March. Pond baskets I think are better for pines, or in another continent, ficus, but to me, no good for Prunus.

Houston can be very hot and dry in summer (I suppose) : Prunus resent that kind of environment, putting them in a pond basket will raise the risks of the roots to bake and die.

Rookie mistake I guess. That tree has been in that pot for a long time. At a time I actually have everything in pond basket... tridents, JBP, Ficus, Wrightia Religiosa, Quince. This one will definitely get repot this coming Spring. Am slowly moving them out into pot just doesn't have time. Here is another one in pond basket.

It's lost all its leaves !

For the moment, I'd put the square pond basket in a round plastic pot and fill the empty spaces with coarse sand + 20% sphagnum moss, or composted pine bark, or any healthy organic soil.
