Unknown tree

Working on a job site and there is a tree that has to come down and I have no idea what it is, it’s November and all the leaves are off the tree so all I have to go off of is the bark and a couple gashes the excavator left behind. Rather light wood and kind of soft. Unique bark that I’ve never seen before! There is a branch with nice movement that I took off of it and plan to try rooting but not sure what it is! Any help would be much appreciated!

There are always nodes if not actual buds, even after leaf fall They will indicate if the growth pattern is alternate or opposite and therefore reduce the possible options by half straight up.
Not a bark I am familiar with but it may jog someone's memory.

If this is not true, they got some seriously hardcore leaf clean up service...
Everything around the tree has been excavated so odds of finding a leaf laying around are slim. I’ll take a look. Will get a twig pic today aswell. If it is a hackberry, how is their potential as a bonsai? I hear they are prone to disease and not a good choice for human health?

I don’t understand what you’re planning on doing... you cut a branch off and you’re going to try to grow roots from it? Will that work?

Potentially yes, not the proper season for it tho, it’s just starting into dormancy so I’m hoping to move it into the cold room for an artificial winter term at a shortened duration to try and get the sap flowing sooner. Can’t guarantee it’s going to work but I can guarantee someone will think I’m crazy and that’s ok. I don’t have anything invested besides spare time and a small amount of rooting powder. The tree has to be removed anyways.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know, currently on different job site, will post pics later today

If it’s hackberry you want, I would think you could find many to dig up -come spring. They are like weeds here. Very tough plants.

that job site is closed on weekends apparently... this is the branch I took interest in off of it. It’s not that I want a hack berry, I’m just curious what this branch is

I would 2nd the hackberry ID.
One from the back. Note the weird irregular bark ridges. Kind of like morel caps D496B873-CDBB-43B3-ACAC-D69007D34A9F.jpeg

It's too big. Old wood doesn't normally put out roots and the roots need to be fairly close to the buds it will support, and the number of buds present needs to be proportional, like a few or maybe a half dozen. You're 0 for 3. There ain't nothin' pushing in Ottawa in February except Mack trucks with plows. Your best best would be to put 6 or 8 six-inch tips in seed starter in a terrarium on a heat pad.;)
