The Treedeemer
I really liked Brians' idea of the last tree of 2016 thread. And thought.. Why not a "your first tree in 2017" thread.
So.. I'll kick off. I have been looking for a red-leaved beech and cannot find any stock. So I ordered two bare-root nursery plants. Trimmed back from 10 feet, reduced roots bij 75% and potted. Ready to start life as a bonsai in 5-10-20 years.. I will start with roots: I planted beech seeds in fall to have material for rootgrafts next winter. I hope to get some lower bud development so I can chop lower. These will perhaps move into the ground for a few years once I have the roots sorted. Long process ahead.
Then, I also ordered some 4 euro each young plants to grow out. Long-term growing project with species that are hard to get at a reasonable price in trade as more mature bonsai material. I expect to taske lots of layers as time passes and use these grafted maples as stock material. Cork-bark elm, arakawa maple, deshojo maple, shindeshojo maple and pine barked japanese maple. So .. no mature stock bought this year. Need to keep my moey for Japan .
Let's see how long I can avoid buying real trees.
