Two of my Japanese maple air layers, separated two years ago, have a vigorous root structure. I want to up size the pot that they are in. They are in 100% sphagnum Moss. I want to gently remove as much Moss as possible, then re pot in a suitable substrate. Is this an OK time to do this?

I think in NorCal you should be fine repotting now. I wouldn’t worry too much about removing Sphagnum. Just make sure you have decent soil around the sphagnum and that it is secured well so the roots/tree doesn’t rock around in the wind.

I just up potted an air layer I did this spring. I removed as much sphagnum as I dared without breaking roots and potted it in my soil mix. So far it hasn’t skipped a beat.
