What the hell?
Some new buds have formed on the trunk of my freshly collected American Hornbeam, which is great.....but a couple aren't sure which way is up....all that sawing and digging and chopping must've disoriented the poor tree....
It has 3 low branches that I was able to keep which are leafing out now.
Many many buds forming down low, maybe a good future broom candidate.....nebari is buried deep, the tree's sawed off bottom is wired to the bottom of the pot.
I'm just glad its surviving.
But any thoughts on the drunk buds?....just luck of the draw?

I guess you don't have to worry about wiring those down! Nice trunk
That did cross my mind...haha!
Those ones might end up gone in the future anyway, if a broom is in fact where it goes....I'm hoping for more buds on the trunk up higher, and maybe some carving.
I actually saw a beech today that reminded me of this tree, the whole top was broken off, hollowed out, lots of exposed roots on a hill on the roadside.
But time will tell....

If you're wanting a broom, plan on keeping plenty of buds, position and thread graft them, basically build your tree. Out of the few I have they didn't shoot tons at the cut

It looks like with the amount of buds I have popping out down low right now, I should be able to build a nice broom with it. But we'll see.

I'll probably leave it for 2 years to recover, before looking at the roots again....sorry I dont have pics.
But it has good flare radial orientation of several main roots.

Love the bark on this one. Those vertical strips are almost my favorite feature of a Hornbeam, and they don’t always seem this prominent on American Hornbeams,
