Urban Yamadori "Mission Fig"

Over the holiday I mentioned that I came across a very cool Mission Fig in the parking lot of a fast food place. I asked if I could dig it out and they said I could, so this last saturday I did just that. This thing is pretty beefy and I'm not sure how big the final tree will be but I couldn't pass it up. It took about 4 hours, 2 sawzall batteries and a chainsaw to remove but is now a distant memory(yeah right, still sore!) Overall opinions and design opinions welcome.

All I can say is WOW :D
 
The timing, temperature wise is a little off so I am trying to give it some bottom heat by using a 18' incandescent rope light from home depot under the pot. Ted Matson just gave me the idea this last sunday and it seems to give off decent warmth.
 
Reptile matts work spiffy and their flat too.
 
I use deicing cables for the few times we go below freezing on some of my zone 9 or higher plants. ;)

That is big! Reminds me of my biggest dig (much smaller than that though). Hope it survives. Good luck!!!

How's your back?

After I got my big one...I swore not to dig anything that size again (took me around 8-9 hours). The main reason I got a recip saw after.
 
Wow, Nathan! This is awesome. I can't wait to learn more about collecting.
In the last few days I've been trying to keep an eye out for shrubs/trees as I drive around and I think I've seen a few things at least worth inspecting up close. Do you have a lot of success with businesses? Who do you talk to about the land adjacent to a freeway on/offramp?

Usually off limits and owned by the Transportation Dept.

I collected several and usually find them via Craigslist and drive by landscaping crews replacing plants. My best are from old hedges though I am very new like you (just a year ahead).

Darn! I've seen some trees/shrubs that looked like they were good sized in those spots. So, if I spot a crew working in those areas, I can stop and just ask for what they're digging up? You probably have to dig it up yourself though right? I imagine they're not going to be as careful and will be more likely to kill the tree while removing it?

Craigslist, huh? That would *never* have occured to me! What would I search?

On Craigslist, I usually just go to the "free section". If I search I use; hedge, hedges, shrub, shrubs, bushes, trees. (Craigslist search function is not smart enough to factor "s")

Workers dig to remove it...and doesn't care about survival. Maybe if you offer to pay them, they'll do a better job. I had some pre-dug trees that I picked up that survived. Most of my fatalities are from same group though.

Ha ha, if that is you in the photo/avatar, you may have better luck than big Dave and his sons. We almost got arrested Christmas Day working on some Bougainvilleas where the highway was being widened. Lucky we got them just dug, when the fireworks started.

Busybody lady above the freeway called the cops,

Officers said. " You gotta clean up and cease and desist, I said"okay sure Ill just get these stumps out of here , uh huh, yes sir.

Next day..Caltrans .bulldozed the whole area

True story...

LOL! Maybe I can choose my outfit strategically too? ;)

Now when the cops do show up, are they generally pretty nice about it initially if you feign ignorance in a situation like that or is it unusual that they didn't threaten you with arrest or something more serious like that?

Note, of course I'm not suggesting wanton disregard for rules and ownership rights while pleading ignorance, but wondering for more the kind of situation you describe where the trees will probably be destroyed anyway.
 
I have a Metro jumpsuit and neon vest on standby for a freeway, roadway mission ;)

I was thinking I might have to adapt my construction outfit for the purpose, but I might want to borrow your jumpsuit and vest instead.

With that suit you might get the workers dig the trees properly for you but the police might arrest you...so just he can have your info and have you by himself! LOL Careful!
 
Hahahah! I'm hoping that if Nathan sees me as an asset, he'll take me on as a Yamadori apprentice. ;)
