I acquired this tree a year ago, and added 5 Kishu approach grafts. Last June, I began the process of weaning the grafts from their roots.
One of the grafts didn’t make it, so there are 4 active grafts. This past weekend, I scraped off more of the stem. And cut back on the old native Utah foliage. This makes the tree push the new Kishu foliage.
Native Utah foliage.
Deadwood. Utah juniper deadwood tends to tot less than some of the other American junipers.
The pots holding the Kishu approach grafts are hung on the tree. There’s also a 1x1 stick helping to prop the tree in place while the roots fill the pot.
