How would I go about finding out the value of a few scrolls?

I have a neighbor that has been admiring my bonsai for a couple of years now. Every once and a while he will come over and we will share a beer or two while he watches me work on trees. Well, one day last week, he came over and was amazed that I was watering trees during the winter. In my garage, no less!

He helped with moving them around a little bit, and found a little juniper that he fell in love with. I gave it to him as a gift, and told him that I would help him with the maintenence of said tree. He was thrilled, and said he had something for me.

Well, to keep this story short, he returned that evening, beer in hand, and a box in the other. He said everything in the box was mine. He said he "picked it up" at an estate sale many years ago in NJ. Inside was several Japanese knick knacks, and two scrolls.

He said that the estate sale was at a mansion. He said the husband had died, and the wife was moving back to Japan. She had moved out most of the furniture, paintings, and things she wanted to take with her. He said everyting else was for sale. He said people were going crazy for the stuff. He said people were taking stuff off of the walls, stuffing it in a box and buying the box for $25-$50! OMG! I would have loved to be at that sale!

Anyways, how would I go about finding out what these scrolls are, who did them, and how much they are worth? They look fairly old.

Thanks,
-Troy

Do not know anyone that actually appraises scrolls; however, yours sound as if they are probably pre-1940 and I would think this would enhance the value. Hopefully, someone will weigh in with knowledge how to identify the artist and help you. Do you have photos?

True. They may not be worth squat. I don't know. I like them both. I think they are very cool looking. And the price was right for me....

If I find out that they are worth $10, I will hang them on the wall in my garage. If they are worth 1000's, well, I'm sure somebody would like to
have them hanging on their wall instead. I love trading stuff, and I am always looking to upgrade the bonsai on my bench!

I will post some pics shortly. Thanks for the info.

You might do a search on Ebay using "Japanese scrolls." See what comes up and the prices. You may get a better idea of what's out there and what it's worth.

This scroll is pretty nice and looks to be in good, clean condition. However the subject material is obscure, which will limit its value outside Japan. From what I can see in the photos, the painting is also done on paper, not silk. Silk painting tends to increase the value a bit.

Anybody know anything about these minifans? They were in the box with the scrolls.

These things were in the box too. I think they are warriors?

This will be my 5th year working with bonsai, but I never really got into collecting any kind of Japanese art. If anybody can tell me anything about any of these, good or bad, I would greatly appreciate it.
