I want to "wire up" a new leader using velcro - I would tie the new leader to the upper part of the trunk. Figured this would be easier than using wire on young branches. Any reason why this should not be used?

Zip ties work well also. I use them for what you mention and to tie trees in pots. I found some long thin ones.

I have used velcro on my trees. I have the black stuff my husband uses to bundle cords in his IT work. It spreads the pressure from wire over a wider surface, seems easier on the bark in sensitive areas.
