I visited the Japanese gardens, small bonsai display at MN Como Park/Ordway Gardens this weekend. They had some obligatory trees in the gift shop, and after talking with the proprietor (who is the bonsai manager/trainer/caregiver), I was satisfied this wasn't mallsai territory. This little guy went home with me and is wintering in my 50 degree storage room in the basement. Looking forward to something that grows fast. Not super fond of the pre-set "S: but I can have fun growing then chop it back eventually.

Everything else I have is zone-appropriate (or close to it), with a heavy lean toward conifers, so this ought to be fun to try.

They do grow like a weed! I picked up another cheap sad looking one in early April, cut it back and now it looks like a completely different tree.

It will grow faster if you stop giving it Diet Soda. A hearty lager perhaps :p
