This is a Red Elf pyracantha and a crumb donut. I bought the plant for $11 and the donut was a gift. One thing is for sure on this one the tree will last longer than the donut......I think.

Pyracantha is one of my favorite plants and I have one that started as almost a twig. I decided to be aggressive and repotted/defoliated at the same time. It is working its way back.

This one is really budding out right now. Will get it in a pot in a couple of weeks. Are they slow growing?

I don't think it is too slow. I'm not sure as a bonsai, but we lived in Tucson with one outside our front door and it grew pretty fast, with no attention.

The red elf is a dwarf and on the slow side but workable IMO and very pretty.

I suggest you choose some sacrifices and let them grow. Prune the apical branches you plan to keep (at the right time for your area) and start to get some ramification (which is tough on firethorn).

I think best suited for a shohin bonsai.

I'm always excited when I see a new pyracantha, wish they were more well known.

Love the little red berries as well.
