Swinging by the garden center while celebrating the wonders of capitalism, I saw that Walmart had a new crop of “Bonsai Trees” available. These, however, bore a striking resemblance to the golden gate ficus one might find one the Brussels website in the $119 range. So I ponies up a cool $29 and took this fella home.

Repot today. Mostly to get him out of the potting soil. Found that the funky curves kept going below the soil line so he got a lean in the new pot.

Would love to hear any comments or suggestions. Still not sure where I’ll go from here.

Changing the planting angel that much is a radical design decision, and I think it greatly improves the potential. I suggest yoiu let it grow freely until early summer, then see what fires your imagination. I can see a windswept tree, an exposed root style, or even a raft banyan. Cool!

I like it. Angling it like that really changes everything about it. I think once this thing adjusts and starts growing you'll get a better idea of where to go with it. If I were you I'd cut off all the branches on the right side except for the first one and regrow all the branches so they're in proportion and taper as they get higher. If you want it more squat you could grow an entirely new top section. Just a couple ideas.
