Yeah but wtf happens where the UK have the gnarliest hawthorn I’ve ever seen I drove around after work down back roads near farms and I saw nothing of the sort. Guess I gotta go to more farms where there are cattle
Even without the graising of wild animals, the Hawthorn here can get really craggy bark. The ones im seeing across the pond tend to be smoother in appearance. For sure check out your farms

I just made a trip up and down Vermont route 100 and I saw many places just loaded with hawthorns as we passed by. They tend to be invasive, grow in scrub land, lots of them were in flat ground along creeks and rivers. They were easy to spot before foliage comes out by the silvery white color of their finer branches.
