Ok, just got back from the watering mission at 0630. I was mostly clear of nosey neighbors and did not see any black helicopters. Then I realized, hey it's raining, in May. I don't need to water today.

Typical government. I wonder if any of those beuro's knows that filling up 3 55 gallon drums 2 days a week uses just as much water as hand irrigating my plants every day.

Hopefully my neighbors won't turn me in. The government has been encouraging this for a long time. Turn in thy neighbor.

Brave new world we live in.

That's what Nazis do. The funny thing is that these regulations apply to every body but them; kind of like Al Gore in his mansion running his outdoor flood lights all night long.

You should be collecting that rain water.
I use rain water for my trees. I figured out how much I need on hand to make it through our mini droughts. Works great, free, and nobody decides how often I can water my trees but me.

Not meaning to be argumentative because your idea is good except for one problem; in order for it to work one must have rain. Funny thing is; a drought is usually marked by a substantial lack of rain. If that were not so it would not be a drought.

Every drop of water that has ever been on the earth is still here, except the gallon of so we sent off in space, all we have to do is find a better way to reclaim it. Hopefully reclamation will start before the sh*t hits the fan. If our dumb ass government would quit adding pork projects on all the bills like the bridge in Alaska, we could already have the technology to do it.

Harry

On the money again Harry. This shows you how we have dumbed down society from the stand point of education. There is a little principle of physics called the law of conservation of matter. Essentially it states: You can neither create or destroy matter you can only alter what state it exists in.

Typical California whiners. "Best sun in the world. Come check out our beaches" blah blah blah. Either you like the area or you don't. On a more serious note, you could always move to western Washington. You only have to water your trees about two months out of the year here. The rest of the year is an auto watering system. My trees have gills how about yours?

So true Vance but as you quoted up above there was rain.
Even drought areas have a rainy season. You might not be able to collect enough to carry you through but even doing something is better than nothing.
Or we can stand outside in the rain as the solution to our problem smacks us upside the head and we grumble about the politicians. =-)

But not trying to start a battle here just suggesting if someone has a drought season there are things you can do to prepare for it. Maybe ya just need bigger buckets.

If I'm not mistaken it's almost mudslide season out there as well....not sure what to do about that one cept maybe host a few mud wrestling contests? :)
Be sure to take pics.

It's the first time I've ever seen someone win a Godwin point even before being read :D (sorry, no emoticon for ROLLOTF, or sthg, but I'd like to mention that :D is an understatement)

Have a look at this page :

Or maybe there's a kind of humour I didn't get in that (title of) first message ?...

How about water tanks to gather rain in the winter, when your precious little bonsai don't need it, and use the water in dry periods ?...

Too smart for you ?...

I'm glad I live in Europe,

I agree with you 100%, I'm, glad you live in Europe too.

Kind of leaves me reeling. It is not so scary to imagine someone inebriated almost unto death while writing the previous ----rant? But to consider it done with a clear mind and steady hand is terrifying.

Harry and Vance, and all of you other "black-helicopter" fearing folks -
You really need to lighten up, and get a little education.

Harry, you brag about all the water there is in Ok..... well there isn't. That big 'ol aquafer that your sitting on, that runs all the way from MO to New Mexico is so depleted that it has dropped nearly 60% in the last 50 years. How long do you think it will last? Don't say it comes from lakes. Do you know what a lake is? It is the water that acculates in the low spots where the land surface dips below the aquafer. I bet those lake levels are waaay below where they were just 10 years ago.

Vance, yes there is just as much water now as there has ever been. But there are BILLIONS more people using and consuming it. Once that water is released back to the earth - it takes DECADES for that water to get back to the aquafer. A large majority of the water in the world is in that transition - soaking in - but will not be available for our use for decades. And the more people using more water means more of the worlds water is in transit- soaking in and unavailable to us. So the more we use, the longer it will be before that water is available again. So the available amount shrinks by the day.
And the worlds population keeps growing......

Get real guys, the gov't is not out to get you. Vigilance is one thing, paranoia is quite another.

Amen Harry but we have the technology to do it. Tampa has the largest desalinization plant in north America and it works well but man is it expensive to operate. So much energy is needed they need to build right next to a power plant. The heavy concentration salt discharge is routed to the power plant to help cooling and is the returned to the ocean.

It produces 25 million gallons a day. That's 10% of the daily drinking water for the city of Tampa. It cost $158 million to build though so even with free seawater it's a bit pricey.

Recharge time for a confined aquifer of that magnitude is likely in the range of thousands of years.

confined aquifers are underneath the bedrock. (free flowing artesian wells) ex/ Ogallala

unconfined aquifers are above the bedrock and create the water table and lakes. (pump wells)

-Dave

I think the idea of collecting rain water couldn't hurt, but it rains here all the time, unless it is snowing.

I don't about the lakes where you live, but ours are all man made holes in the ground that are filled by rivers and rain run off, unless someone dams up the rivers before it gets here were ok. There are lakes in wetter parts of Oklahoma that recieve more rain than we do in the center of the state, so we have contracts to buy water from them in case our lakes get low. Maybe you should concern yourself with Idaho and not worry about us.What the hell does water have to do with black helicopters, you on the suds tonight. As far as education, Oklahoma has more lake shoreline than any state.

I thought that it was the free market or the citizens role to come up with solutions as the government turns everything it touch into a massive failure. Would that mean you realize that a lot of companies are so focused on the next trimester profit that they couldn't come up with a long term plan to save their own life?

For those in drought areas, reuse as much water as possible with simple technology: solar stills. They have no mechanical part, there is nothing that breaks down in their design. You can easily modify bonsai shelves to collect the used water and feed it to the still, this has 2 advantages: no runaway fertilizers reaching the water table and drastically lowered water use. Couple that with two big rain water tanks and you could have a self-contained, off-the-grid, sustainable source of water for your bonsai. You could even throw in a solar-powered water pump to feed an overhead watering system.

This idea will save you money in the long run, it saves resources and doesn't require any government involvement... what else could you ask for?

Hey Michael, that sounds very interesting. I'll be moving to Atlanta, GA where drought is a big issue, and I would love to have a system like this...do you have any links or sources for more info on these solar stills. Thanks,

Dave

The government outlawed stills here a long time ago. I would like to see some of my tax money put to good use, not line the pockets of those suits in DC, or pissed off in their home state to keep them in office.

To continue: Paid out to those who have illegally come to this county, doled out to countries and organizations that are dedicated to the destruction of this country, defending those who have been caught taking up arms against her, and to pay those who are responsible for the crisis we are now enduring. To those who find it a worthwhile caveat to accuse some, who after looking out the window declare that it is raining, as being the black helicopter crowd because this mornings weather man, who gets paid for being wrong at least fifty-percent of the time, said the sun was shining. It ain't paranoia to respond to your smoke detector.

I read this whole post before it was edited, and was surprised, to say the least. From what I'd seen on Bonsaichat, Alain could certainly be biting, but was always kulturny.

Ouch, then you are well and truly f'd.

For comparison, in this area of "socialist Germany" the private company managing the utilities actively encourages you to use/reuse/filter the water.

Free Market!

You are joking right. We have not seen that for at least 100 years.

As far as collecting rainwater in big underground storage tanks. I may do that when they abolish the income tax. Right now there is a mega amount of water up north but the environmental lobby groups make shure to claim some new kind of "shakey turbine granny goose" or a new type of "black mouth tar grass" to keep people from using it.

Like I said before it is mostly political. There is a water shortage like I am about to die from the pork flu or whatever.

BTW the government is out to get you. Just look at what the IRS does to people for one example of it.
