Watering the winter/spring

I'v been wondering for a long while, should i be watering during the winter? iv always thought it would be a bad idea, as the tree is dormant and it will just freeze the roots? And tbh, i didn't water my CBS or maple during the winter..
Also, atm the temp is -10 - 15Celcius here and my trees are all in my unheated garage.. should i still be watering them? it went from winter (aka -30) to +20 to -15C in like a week or less (May is messed up here!) - so i moved them inside..
Iv watered them twice since, because it doesn't appear that they are frozen..

Am i ok to keep watering them, or should i just leave them until it gets nicer outside to water?

Maintain moist soil at all times. Most trees that are hardy in your area should be able to withstand frozen roots for a couple of days at a time but may need protection beyond that.

Soil does not freeze water does. If your soil is frozen then the tree does not need water. If it is dry or you can move it (most inorganic substrate) it requires to be watered. I water my trees maybe 3 -5 times a winter.
