Weird red bumps on roots

I discovered these red globules on several trees that I unpotted today that never woke up after the winter.

Any ideas on what it is?

Looks more like a post death fungus than something that killed it, but I can't be sure.

Thank you for the insight. I might show the extension office if I go to the farmers market today to see if they have a name for it.
