Did first styling on this landscape hornbeam I picked up last year. The chop still needs carving/closing and a chunky root I cut off needs tidying up next year too, but I'm using it as a tie down point at the moment. I've buried the nebari (which pretty much decided the lean for me) for now, that should be pretty good in a few years. All in all, pretty happy with how it went. Still haven't decided the exact front yet so here's a couple of views.

Picked up this giant trident maple. Ready for spring in giant Yoshimura crackle glaze cream colored pot. Trunk is seven inches across out of the soil and has almost 9 inch spread. About 20 inches tall. Tree should canopy out at about 26 inches tall.

I've finally gotten fed up with the piles and piles of this:

20230112_113342.jpg

which has gotten worse several fold now that we have a larger property and a much larger area to garden and landscape...

So I bought a couple of these:

20230112_114906.jpg

And started filling them like this:

20230112_114137.jpg

As I move seeds into vials I enter them into a spreadsheet with some useful information:

Common NameScientific NameLocationYearSourceNotes
dawn redwoodsequoia glyptostroboidesG12022Sheffield's

...and now I have a more organized collection of seeds! Plus, I can see them from my phone/computer any time I want...

Most of the seeds will be collected garden/annual seeds to replant the next season...but I reckon I have enough tree seeds to almost fill one of these with just trees!

Just checking on things. Thankfully the planning came together and I only get a degree or two increase during the day.

Wow
.. what a peaceful-looking space.

Respect due!

(Uhhhg!!! I keep responding, not realizing it's THIS thread((my new favorite))! Then having to take more pictures! 🤣)

Today I worked on this piece... Guided to a natural "Hurry up and wait"-style plateau between degrees of dryness for further edging and burnishing.IMG_20230112_171518.jpg

And engaged in some "beat work". 🤓IMG_20230112_172617.jpg

Got 3 (5!) tridents bare root, 3 chinese quinces plugs and 3 (6!) BCs bareroot from Kaede Bonsai-en. Potted them up with some interference from the second only to squirrels scourge of bonsai…

please tell me where you bought this! I have tons of veggie seed bags and they are driving me nuts. This is brilliant.

The specific ones I got were these:

but search "seed storage" in either Amazon or Google and there are lots of different options/types. I went with little vials because I collect a lot of loose seed from trees, wildflowers, heirloom veggies, etc...

If by "seed bag" you mean standard seed packets from like Burpee, there are boxes that are more like file cabinets where the packets themselves can be organized...which is better for some.

As for the requisite picture:

Of the 4 willow leaf ficus I currently have, this is the only one that dropped all its leaves this year...and it's starting to bud out again. So I spent a few minutes to go from this

to this

Some detritus cleanup, a peak at the root attachment development and some light pruning and wiring to get it ready for another year of growth.

First styling on collected field elm. Can't decide whether to hollow out the dead wood on the trunk to where it's healed already or to leave it natural. Also, not sure about the best front. Prefer the front of the first pic, but all the growth emanates from the rear in that case.

I'm on the phone a lot for work. When I work from home I get up and pace around the house (and yard) when I'm talking, so I end up staring at my trees a lot during the day.

I planted about 80 coast live oak acorns a couple months back and they're just starting to pop, so I obsessively check them like 6 times a day to see if any new ones have sprung up. What's the only thing more boring than watching grass grow?? Watching oak trees grow 🤣 . My wife thinks I'm insane.

I got a big bag of southern live oaks in refrigerated storage waiting on spring. I’m gonna be doing the same thing 🤣
