I dug this from the neighbors yard. They were cleaning up a planter and this came up next to a palm tree. It has been pruned before because it has a few dried canes on it. The flesh has flowed around the dead portions and has kept going. I was able to dig it out quite easily with an exe and got a pretty good intact root ball on it. I didn't clean away any of the field soil just planted it into a cut down five and will see what happens.

I did include some close ups of the trunk and one partial leaf still on the stump. I have no idea what it is, but suspect some bird planted privet. I have dated this thread and will see just how fast I can make something out of this.

I think Privet have light tan/grey color bark. Unless they're different out West.

Are those thorns?

The twigs do look like Privet with those little pale dots. Leaves opposite i assume? I guest the horrible lighting throws in a monkey wrench. Her's some of mine for comparison. Could be different species maybe? First one is smallest at around 3/4" trunk.

Here's a crappy light shot and the bark do look reddish but it's really grayish. Leaves can reduce a lot. I think it can go half the size of this example.

Could be some kind of bird tree also. Whats that tree that gets black berries on it? Could be Black cherry. Invasive around here. I have lots in my backyard and just cut down 11 of them. Here is a picture from wikipedia of immature shoot.

Finding the line

This is where the material took me today. Found some time to cut out a pleasing line in the trunk. Much of what I cut off was dead anyway except way down at the base. I originally thought of a clump style but found that I could not get what I wanted so just went for the most dramatic movement the material had to offer.
The larger looking stub I left on the upper part of the trunk was good and green when I squared it up. I felt that leaving a stub for possible bud push would be a good idea. I can remove it later when I have something to cut back to, but for now, it is one less scar and more acerage to bud from.

We will get some ice here. Not much in the city but the country areas will get much more and for longer periods. Frost and bonsai are OK, it's the length of time exposed to the frost that is tricky. 25 degrees for an hour or two is no big deal. 25 degrees for 6 hours will fry unprotected bonsai. Global warming has all but solved my problems.

You will need shade cloth here if you don't have shade in portions of your growing area.
