My wife's friend gave her this bonsai 2 years ago. During that time I've adopted it and cared for it. Can someone please identify this tree? I thought it could be a money tree. Anyone?Photo on 6-25-13 at 12.54 PM.jpg

Sorry, its not a bonsai but a houseplant called a ginseng ficus.

Wow

Thanks. When she got it, the "plant" came with a bonsai information stake. I was wondering why the tree type wasn't listed. Well, I guess that clears up the mystery. It's a very cool plant regardless.

Any tree can be a bonsai. But good ones resemble a full grow tree.

A ginseng ficus can be a Bonsai... I see no reason why it can't. It produces a nice, woody stem (though clearly it has a odd shape) and the foliage is much like any other Ficus... It may not be a masterpiece any time soon, but it is a tree and can easily be considered a Bonsai.

I agree
While I suppose it can technically be called one, IMHO it ain't no bonsai

I call them elephantiasis plants.

AWFUL things, IMO.

You see those a lot at Home Depot and Lowes labeled as "Bonsai". I would have to agree with others that I dont really consider it a bonsai per se. It is a nice little plant though.

You went to Mexico and drank the water, didn't you?.....Calling this THING a bonsai is like calling Larry The Cable Guy a comedian instead of the high functioning autistic that he is.....

No need to be ugly.

If others think/believe they can bonsai schefflera or even Portulacaria afra...why not this? Granted it is not a bonsai yet, I believe it can be. It may be intimidating to some but with enough know how and artistry, I do not see it being out of the bonsai realm. Whether it is worth the trouble or not is another question.

I agree 100pct :) My Wife even has a Desert rose in training with a real nice swept look at his point - not easy to do but possible

I did a search to see if I could find one and had no luck
I think that one benefit a person acquires when they have been doing bonsai long enough to have some know how and artistry is reconciling a lost cause/waste of time when they see one

Wow...you conveniently truncated my post to say (with some stabs) what is basically on my message.

Sorry, I just left out the unicorns and rainbow parts to try and say it's not worth the trouble.I actually have one of these that looks like a moose that my daughter brought back from college. I still have it because I would never throw any tree in the compost pile and would never sell it as a bonsai at a club sale.
It's cool enough I guess, but will never be a bonsai.

What do you think about this: http://lennardsbonsaibeginnings.blogspot.com/2013/02/ginseng-pot-belly-ficus.html?m=1 ?

With a little work they can look more like a bonsai than people give them credit for. If someone wanted advice on a ficus I would steer them away from one of these, but it can be a fun back burner project.

Great

If you take really good care of it, it will be a great bonsai. My uncle gave me one and its about 5 years old and it is huge, its about 2 feet tall and the trunk is 4 inches wide so if you take care of it, it will become a bonsai. :o
