Last summer I bought this maple from a bonsai nursery in Modesto, CA. He had bought it from another bonsai nursery gone out of business. It was sold as a trident, but I think its a field maple. Today I repotted it and found some interesting trunk beneath old roots. The first photo was taken when first purchased and the second one was taken today, and the third (a late addition to post) was taken in Nov.

I'm just guessing, but it looks like it was field grown and neglected for a while. What do you think?
