This past weekend I bought a 3 gallon red flowering quince. In the same container, about 3 inch from the main tree, there is another smaller quince growing. I would like to separate that out and plant it. When would be the best time to do it? The main quince already has some flower buds but the little one is still bare.

Two choices
  1. before blooming - flower buds are easily knocked off, if you care.
  2. after the summer solstice, e.g., Aug/Sep <-- my preference.
    1. you've enjoyed the flowers, months ago.
    2. trees grow, hence recover, faster the higher the temperature
      1. up to about 90F
    3. rH about 50% or more
Right after flowering is not good, IMHO.

My vote for "the best time" is after the summer solstice.

Been reading a lot on flowering quince and most are in agreement with you in that aspect.

Since I wanted to pot it, I decided to separate them now. It was a good thing. I was able to pull the little one out fairly easily. I think it would be much harder if I let the roots grow until later. If I lose some flowers I'm OK with that. I just want it to live. BTW, the root looked wet and unhealthy. I wish I had dug in and look at the nursery. Live and learn :)
