Is has been a strange winter in northern California. It hasn't rained in February and the temps are in the 70s. Many of my Japanese maples are starting to bud. When is the optimal time to start my air layers?

Any time between now and when the spring flush has hardened off.

Tomorrow morning I will take a picture of it and post it. It's been so long I have forgotten what variety this Maple is.

Some more than others. Look up whatever cultivar you have to see what the likelihood is.
Here are some pictures of the to maples I air layered this weekend. My next question is here in California we tend to have pretty mild springs do you water your are layers directly?

I normally air layer the first flush as soon as it has harden off.
