The best time is usually spring but I've read that after blooming is done is a good time which is about a week or two away. These are yamadori so any advice from that aspect would be great as these are my first ume, like shade till they start pushing growth or full sun and the like

You could wait until after bloom, but, if it were me, I would collect them now. If they are getting ready to bloom it means that all systems are go. Wouldn't let them waste energy on blooms. Cut them back hard and take them up. Also, for collected deciduous, I put them out in the sun immediately after boxing them up. Spring seems to be moving in early this year, ( at least here in the south), So just be watchful of freezes and cover them or move them under cover till the freeze has past, although, a light freeze probably wouldn't hurt them. Hope this helps, Giga......................SK

Collecting anytime before they leaf out should be fine. Like Steve said blooms do waste energy, so if you can avoid that would be good-side note -fruit waste a lot more energy. Maybe winter protection if it get's really cold. Then place them in full sun throughout the growing season.

And please post some pics:)

There in mid bloom right now, so I guess now would be good to collect. We still a few days of freeze coming up but a couple of my trees are starting to move too. There is a tough spot as it got two other tree growing almost on top of it.

Wild ume in VA? Or from someone's landscape? We won't find native ume here, maybe Chickasaw plum? (P. angustifolia.)
