I've chopped down 6 nice ones to about 10-12", depending on the truck, which vary between 1 3/4"-3" . My boss has a grove, in his back yard of J. Maples(hundreds) from a large tree in the neighbors yard. He said I can help myself to whatever I want. I dug up some in the spring that are doing fine.Which is better-spring or late fall-for removing them? These I'm pruning first while in the ground. The others I dug then pruned. These trees will look like some of the $3000 ones, in a few years if I'm careful. And if I eff some up, no money lost here, but a plant or tree loosing its life shouldn't be taken lightly.

If you turn hundreds of seedling maples into $3000 trees in a few years I want to buy your book.

Seems to me it'd make more sense to dig them in the spring since if you dig them in the fall you won't be able to do anythin with them anyways and will have to provide shelter for them.
