I have a zelkova I collected last summer. Seems to be doing fine, so I was wanting to reduce the height. Is it better to cut now or in the spring?

Also there was a thread about doing the major cut on a zelkova and how to carve out the cut so it reduces swelling as the new shoots come out. I seem to remember something about drilling out the wood. I can’t seem to find it. Anyone know the name of that thread? Thanks!

If you are looking for a ring of growth, I'd do it after some good spring growth, early summer.

Cutting it now and leaving it without healing ability all winter can ruin a good consistent ring of buds.

It's going to have a different agenda in spring, so it probly won't concentrate energy to a good ring of buds.

I cut in the height of summer for large chops (over 3/8”) but right about now, as leaves are dropping is when I clean up Branches for fall. I see visible callousing after a week but I have a pretty mild winter.
