Starting to give some though to fall (and winter, aargh!) and was wondering when folks start to taper off their fertilization of Japanese maples. I am using liquid fertilizer (Dyna Pro) and planned on starting to lower the dosage in mid-August and continue to do so weekly until the leaves fall off. Thoughts?

I don’t really taper fertilizer or change it’s make up during the growing season. I fertilize maples from the time the spring growth has begun to harden until fall when the leaves are turning on a weekly basis with fish emulsion. The soil surface usually has some sort of solid organic feed as well. More refined trees get fed less, though.
