Hey man..now that I got your attention...

Through this forum I have been provided the names of great vendors for trees. I don't recall seeing an extensive list of vendors for quality pots. I have bought japanese pots, mostly from overseas ebay sellers. Maybe I have overpaid on some, but I am happy with them.

I'm looking now for a large deep pot to have on hand for repotting this tree in the spring.

If I remember correctly the pot is 3 inches deep and I want to have something deeper so I can bury a little more to cover reverse taper. I'm having a tough time finding deep pots.

So where do you get yours?

I am sorry, I do not know of a great vendor for post, but I do want to ask you something- I am coming to NY in April, we will be staying close to Times Square... Is there anywhere I need to visit- good nurseries, Bonsai exhibitions, Arboretum or Garden with nice collection... Somewhere in the Manhatten/ Central Park Area preferably as cab fair is a beast I have been told... I found one little nursery listed in that area, but they seem to focus on tropicals... Not really my favorites. I am probably not going to be able to buy a whole lot unless they ship it home for me, but a place just to see some nice trees would be cool. It is our Honeymoon and my fiancée would probably be ok with a quick visit to a show, but to an all day shopping for trees trip..

Mostly at shows and conventions, although we have a very good potter locally.

I don't think there is much in the city. I have never personally been, but there is this in Brooklyn.

Depending when in April you are in town, over in NJ is a huge show, the Mid Atlantic Bonsai Convention. I think it is around the weekend of the 26th or so.

I get them wherever I can. I started collecting nice Japanese pots probably 5 years after I started into the hobby. I purchased a lot from NEBG up until I moved south...they still have a pretty good selection and you get a great member discount, but the selection isn't nearly as good as it was 5 years ago. I've purchased a fair number of hand made pots from Dale Colchoy at shows, as well as some descent Chinese pots from Yen at Osiga Company- he vends at shows and can be contacted with the email at his website. I've also had some pots commissioned by Sara Rayner. I used to buy pots just because I like them, but now, I really only purchase pots when I can see a tree I own that might be appropriate for it within a few years...I'm running out of room:).

And here I thought this was going to be a Colorado or Washington discussion.

Thanks for the subject though, I have been gearing up for finding better quality pots. Craigslist is good for pots, but rarely are there any of quality.

Don't forget Charles Iker. Very high temp fired pots, reasonable, and is very nice to work with as far as making what you want not just what he offers. http://www.ikerbonsaipots.com/

Thanks Grim. I guess I could consider going that route as well.
I actually have a few iker pots, all small. Very good quality. I just need to get trees for them!

As someone already mentioned, you should definitely go to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. I live in Mahattan (soho) and it usually takes me 20 mins (train ride), I think it may take you longer. It is definitely worth a visit. I will provide you with a link for info. Unfortunately that is the only jewel that is here in 5 boroughs =(

Also don't forget
Ron Lang
Byron Myric
Paul J Katich
Taiko earth
In no particular order.

Also a guy named Randy Doughty, I'm trying him out this year. He has a esty store called bent pine pottery, but does custom work as well.

Love Chuck Iker too...
Hollow Creek has a wide variety as well.

You can find large pots reasonably on ebay from Oriental arts and furniture store, I use them for training pots, they are yixing clay and durable. Have some of their glazed ones as well, not quite as nice as the unglazed they carry.

My Wife and I figure out size and shape, we then check his current stock and quickly decide "if he could do our size in that finish" lol. But on a good note we call him, he fires off a couple and emails pictures. Real nice for us as if we don't like it he simply sells them and fires our final request. But honest he usually fires 2 or 3 and we always pick one that is perfect from the group.

I love that pot on top of the chest in pic #4!

That's a Dale Colchoy "dry river bed" oval. It's one of my favorite pots, and had been purchased with a particular yamadori lodgepole pine in mind. Unfortunately, the tree was so intimidated by the pairing, it committed suicide:(:p.

I recently bought a pot on ebay from Rob MacGregor out of Ohio.
He only has 2 on ebay right now. robertm5747 is his seller ID. Maybe you can contact him through ebay and see what else he might have. Very reasonable prices, very nice work.
I also ran across a guy out of Maine who has some very neat stuff. Richard Robertson from Rockport Pottery I believe.
I'm also partial to Ron Lang. Not only close but does very nice work.
Take your time for that pine. It deserves a good one!
