Where to chop Deodar cedar

You see the big branch on the right? Second from top. I'm trying to decide if that's 1) the new leader when I chop. 2) a branch but not the leader or 3) removed leaving a pretty big scar.

If I keep it as a branch it will be larger than lower branches which is weird right

If it's the leader I'm less enthusiastic about options for branches

Removing it means a pretty straight tree and a pretty big wouND

Any thoughts

Throw a few air layers on that and worry about the chop next year!

I'm embarrassed to say I've never air layered anything. I've done all kinds of cuttings, grafted maples and conifers, never an air layer. It is a cultivar so I thought I should maybe at least try some cuttings.

It looked like this before I pruned very hard this spring / early summer it was a pretty tree hope it makes a good bonsaiimage.jpg

Certainly take this comment knowing that I'm very new to bonsai but .. I'd cut at the thick branch and use the thinner one on the left as the new leader. With a root system like that your tree will push new growth quickly.
