I have wanted an ume for a while now and wonder where I could get a nice starter. Webssites. as long as they ship and take credit or debit cards.

Hey Gavin,

I got some from William Valavanis early last year and they're doing quite well. The ones I got were just seedlings, but I imagine in Texas you can get a lot out of a growing season.

Here's the catalog: http://www.internationalbonsai.com/files/1708315/uploaded/2012 SEEDLING CATALOG.pdf

You could also try Brent at EvergreenGardenworks -- I know he's got plenty of ume.

He's also a lot closer to you, so shipping may be less expensive.

I know that Muranaka Nursery has ume every once in a while... he sells on ebay. mbn1978 is his ebay name...Don't know if he has any right now.

I just looked up Aransas Pass, TX and noticed that you're in southern Texas...for some reason I was thinking northern before. Do you get any cold weather down there? What other kinds of trees are you growing and how well do they do?

Oh yes, George from Muranaka - http://www.ebay.com/sch/mbn1978/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984

I've seen several on his store. Looks like none right now, but more are bound to pop up. I would try Brent, too. He's got tons of great trees. If you're looking for some more advanced stuff, he might be able to snap some pictures for you (don't quote me on that).

I grow trident maple, black pine, azelea, all junipers except utah, commen, rocky mountain. It is zone 9a to 9B

Sounds like you should do well, then. I would almost suggest ordering from Brent or George over William because of the zone change. I do know, however, that William has a TON of different varieties...so that's certainly worth checking out. If you check out his catalog, you'll see what I mean. Tons of flowering apricots. If you're particularly interested in flowering trees, you should check out those double-flower quinces he's got...If I had more money to play with this season I'd be ordering a couple myself.

I got a really nice trunk from George at Muranaka (http://www.muranakabonsai.com/). I'm sure you could contact him to see what he has. Brent probably has some very nice varieties and great plants, but they may be earlier in development. Depends on what you're looking for.

I got one recently from George Muananka and am really pleased with it. In fact, I have bought several trees from George and highly recommend him.

These photos were a month ago. You should see the tree now.

I have an all day workshop with Bjorn Bjorholm on March 31st when he is here in Birmingham conducting a workshop for Alabama Bonsai Society and this is one of the trees I planned to have there. I can't wait to see and hear what Bjorn Bjorholm will suggest on this.

Nonsense, if we don't share with each other, even trees in progress, how will we learn? ;)
