Where do you all get your pines from? I'm in zone 6b so what kinds of pinese will be good here? I'd like to have a final height under 2 ft tall so it can't be something with long needles/candles, etc.

stick with black pines. King of bonsai and there is so much good information on them.

Japanese Black, Red and White pines from Asia... Mugo and scots pines from Europe...virginia, lodgepole and pitch pines from North America...all have, or can have short needles in bonsai culture and would grow well in zone 6 NJ, and make good, even great bonsai material. As far as sourcing the material, they are available all over, from the internet to big box stores to mom/pop landscape nurseries to specialty bonsai nurseries. As far as the material's usefullness in bonsai, your mileage may vary depending on the source.

If Bill Valvanis is selling them, they've got good potential. Email him and ask to see what one looks like.

I concur that JBP would be the best starter pine.

Sometimes people ask me if it's possible to bring the Conifers indoors and i often reply with a question, why would you want a Pine in the house?

I thought i would share that short story.

On ebay, George Murakana sells JBP for about $100. They're Mikawa, and he's pruned them while they were in the ground. They make great starter/learner JBP. Look for the ones with the light blue background. That's George.

while I agree with this (I own several of Georges) I would venture to guess a 2+ inch trunk would be a great start. Georges on Ebay are generally 3/4- 1 1/4 inches at most.

I checked and they do not ship after March.

Is it impossible for you to make a trip to New York and pick them up? That way you can see what's available and choose those you really want as opposed to having to settle for what you are sent.

No, not impossible but a 1600 mile round trip for a $125 tree seems...excessive.

Isn't Brussels located on the Miss side of Memphis? That might be worth a road trip, if you could justify the three hour drive.

I have been less than inpressed with Brussels. Their pre bonsai is weak and the good bonsai is too expensive. Seems kind of like the walmart of bonsai. JMHO.

Ha! That's good to hear.
I lived in Memphis for about a year, and have since been banging my head for never making it there. A relief to know that I didn't miss out on much.

If you are willing to re-work some of their cheaper trees...I think some have good bones in them. That said, I do see a lot of awful or expensive ones too. JMHO based on what I see on eBay :)

I have several air layers of JBP that should be ready by winter for starter material. Also, like I said, the Nashville show is next month and I'm hoping to find some deals there.

That's my problem I've ran out of room for keeping indoor bonsais and plants such as tropicals so I'm going for strictly outdoor materials.

Nevermind they're 6 hrs from me eventhough the I'm not far from the NJ/NY border.
