I have a crabapple clump with some interesting roots, but it basically has 2 straight, identically sized trunks and some suckers, which I plan to prune off at some time. I want to remove the more boring of the 2 trunks so I was planning to air layer it off, probably next summer.
I was planning to air layer it off just below an area of inverse taper. First of all, I was wondering what looked better, air layering at 1 or 2.
Front of the tree; at this angle, air layer 2 looks better.
But from another angle, you can see an interesting knobby bit between marks 1 and 2, air layering it at 1 would preserve that.
Secondly, I would plan to prune it at the blue mark at some point. Is that best done this year (to let it heal on the tree before airlayering) or should I wait til after layering it so there is more foliage above the layer?
