It’s natural on the new growth of some cultivars. Seems to be more common on the atropurpureum cultivars.

It will go away in a few weeks as the shoots begin to harden. My red leaf maple looks like that every spring. Its the only maple i have that has the fuzz on the new growth too

Yes, in all seriousness, none of my JM exhibit that, but other trees on my bench do. Definitely looks like natural growth to me

My late aunt had some of that growing under her chin...no big deal.

I noticed the same thing on one of my maples and was wondering the same thing, if it was some kind of fungus or natural

Trichomes is the right term for these kind of hairs. They have a bunch of functions but most of it boils down to "protection".
