I have been doing alot of air layering this season....decided to try some White pine....I am not sure what kind it is...as the ID tag was lost....
I am using some air layer containers that I just discovered....they seem very nice.
They come with a special media you can use (if you want)...it has gel crystals to keep it moist.
Also one side is clear so you can see the roots and gauge the progress.
I have no affiliation with them I just think they are very convenient.I got them at airpropagator.com
Check out the pics.
I will update in the fall...

nice clean looking cuts. Hope it works out for you! Julian Adams put out an article on air layering white pines, i forget how long he said it should take to grow, but I think Jason's comment above is spot on that it will take a while to form enough roots to support the growth above.

I also believe bridge cut and tourniquet have the highest success rate.

It is difficult to air layer any pine in my experience. Not impossible, but Japanese white and Black Pine seem especially difficult.

Contact this guy. He is very good at it. I think if you go through his blogs you will find many examples. With that being said I have had two maples layers this summer that have produced no roots. The tops are still alive though, with no evidence of the gap bridging.

I have no experience in air-layering japanese white pine, but I took 5 layers of 5-6 year old branches in 2012, from a normal japanese black pine and removed them in 4 months before the onset of winter, 3 layers made it and are still growing on my benches, 1 closed the gap and regrew, i deemed it too late to reopen the gap and just cut it off, the other one died on the tree, maybe too much sun exposure which kind of fried the soil....a buddy of mine also made 5 layers and 4 took...odds make it in the easily accomplished difficulty level...oms sounds like a video game lol

As for white pine?

I think it will take a long time and the care provided after the layer is made will determine the success, lots of misting the foliage and maybe even foliar feed on the branches where the air-layer sits

kind regards
Herman
